BBN must have the standards information centre physically upgraded and make it a pleasure for clients to visit. The space is more than adequate. BBN should also introduce modern IT based information services, obtain a proper connection to the Internet. Therefore BBN should:
1) Physically upgrade the information centre, i.e. painting, proper floor coverings, reasonable furniture, decent lighting, etc.
2) Install a dedicated PC for information purposes and obtain appropriate connections with appropriate bandwidth and speed to the Internet as soon as possible. Subscribe to Perinorm and other relevant standards information services.
3) In two years time, depending on the frequency of use (currently 5 persons outside of BBN visit the centre per month on average, this needs to increase to at least 10 to 20 per day), BBN will add another PC for use by clients and the staff for obtaining standards related information.
These plans for the next 10 years will demand a concerted effort by the Standards Division, a strong emphasis on project management, strengthened links to the private sector and regulatory authorities and above all the provision of the necessary finances which have to be budgeted for. The re-engineering of the BBN organizational structure to establish a Standards Division that is responsible for the whole standards value chain will also be a very important prerequisite to provide the appropriate focus in achieving the 10 year plan.
